The Umbrellas of Phoenicia
Umbrellas are up which means Phoenicians are eating “al fresco” and Main Street comes alive for another summer! There is so much to look forward to: Live theater at STS on Church Street as Into the Woods plays almost every June weekend, music at Phirst Fridays, Mamas Boy Market and the Mystery Spot Porch and Visual Arts happenings the first Sat of every month with Art Upstairs and Cabane Studios Gallery openings. There are four places to eat outside (actually five if you count our wonderful old-fashioned Ice Cream Station!) From the early morning with locals and tourists alike enjoying pancakes outside Sweet Sue’s or Mama’s Boy continental baked goods and slow cooked goodness to go or stay and dinnertime pizzas/sandwiches /full dinners and Tex-Mex food courtesy of Brios and the Sportsmans Alamo. The east-west axis placement of Phoenicia is perfect for the plein air lifestyle as the sun is always shining somewhere on the street and the gentle conversation mingling with the mountain breezes make meal time a special one. It is no surprise that all Phoenicians are looking forward to the climax of the summer: the great outdoor Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice that happens Aug 4-7. Although many of the vocal concerts will happen in the local churches, halls, boardwalks and theaters of Phoenicia, Saturday Aug 6 will have an unprecedented fully orchestrated (hopefully) opera under the shooting stars in the center of town. Ah the great outdoors! Make time to stroll through town during these wonderful warm evenings -just watch out for the rare errant bear!
